Title: Compaction as a Cause of the Migration of Petroleum

Author(s): R. C. Beckstrom (2), F. M. Van Tuyl (3)

Abstract:

The effect of generating CO2 gas at the base of a Previous HitchargeTop of petroliferous sediments during compaction, using the apparatus designed for an earlier series of experiments, is described. Other tests with a cylinder of smaller bore in which much higher pressures were applied have indicated that a practically complete recovery of oil from a shale-water-oil mixture can be effected within a period of less than sixteen hours. The results warrant the conclusion that compaction is by far the most important cause of the migration of oil from shales into porous reservoirs.
