Title: Base-Replacement Studies of Oklahoma Shales--Critique of Taylor Hypothesis

Author(s): L. C. Case (2)

Abstract:

Clays of an alkaline nature which contain a predominance of replaceable sodium are stated by Taylor to overlie all petroleum deposits. These shales are said to have undergone base replacement in sea water and subsequent leaching in fresh water. An examination of several Oklahoma shales indicates that the base replacement did not take place in ordinary sea water, that the shales were not leached, and that all shales encountered in drilling in Oklahoma are of the one type and such determinations therefore have no application.
