Abstract:
Evidence is presented in favor of the retention of the terms Osage and Meramec as subseries in the standard classification of the Mississippian series of the Carboniferous system. Definite, easily recognizable, stratigraphic life zones are established in the Burlington formation of northeastern Missouri and southeastern Iowa. The subdivisions of the Burlington limestone transgressively overlap against the underlying formations toward the north. Each of the zones of the Burlington limestone, from the base upward, is found successively in contact with underlying formations in the area between Louisiana, Missouri, and Kalona, Iowa.
