Abstract:
The San Ardo oil field is a stratigraphic trap occurring at an updip shale edge of the upper Miocene Lombardi sand. The water-table of the San Ardo field was warped synclinally during the early Pleistocene, dating this as a Pliocene accumulation. Stratigraphic features of the area are discussed. Three Pliocene units, the Pancho Rico, the Etchegoin, and the Paso Robles, are described as partly equivalent facies; the term "San Ardo group" is suggested for these overlapping units.
It is shown that the shoreline edge of sands in the Salinas Valley is not favorable for accumulation.
It is suggested that Pleistocene structures should be discounted during future exploration in the Salinas Valley.
