Approximately 146 new fields and pools were discovered in Kansas during the year 1955, most of which were named by the Nomenclature Committee of the Kansas Geological Society. The tota of 146 discoveries includes 119 oil discoveries, 25 gas discoveries, and 2 for both oil and gas. In addition, there were 16 discoveries of deeper production in previously producing pools; there were 46 discoveries of shallower production in previously producing pools. Of the total new discoveries, 23 were in the new-field category, the remainder new-pool discoveries.

Kansas produced 121,161,234 barrels of oil, 4,919,550 barrels of natural gasoline and LPG, and 466,180,157 MCF of gas in 1955. These production figures place Kansas in fifth place in national production, the place it has held for many years.

There were no successful wildcat tests in Iowa or Nebraska (east of the 98th Meridian); Missouri had 3 shallow successful new-pool wildcats in Cass County.
