Dust storms are a common phenomenon on the Llano Estacado. The area is especially susceptible to blowing dust because of its low topographic relief, scanty vegetal covering, light-textured topsoils, and recurring strong and turbulent winds. Following periods of prolonged drought, the vegetal covering and moisture content of the soil are reduced, producing conditions favorable for mass movement of sediments by the wind. For these reasons, the drought years of 1951, 1952, and 1953 were followed by severe dust storms in 1954.

This study is an analysis of sediments moved by the wind during dust storms. The grain characteristics were analyzed with respect to size, shape, corrasive effects, and mineral composition, and these data were considered in relation to the speed and direction of the wind, the type, and duration of the individual storm. Dust samples were collected at Lubbock, Texas, during storms that occurred between November 19, 1950, and April 26, 1951.
