Author(s): Alfred H. Bell, Virginia Kline

Abstract:

In Illinois 3,640 wells were drilled for oil and gas in 1956, as compared with 3,885 in 1955, a decrease of 6%. These figures are exclusive of water- or gas-input wells, salt-water disposal wells, and old wells worked over.

Exploratory drilling increased 12% from 846 completions in 1955 to 1,028 completions in 1956. Eighteen new pools, 81 extensions, and 19 new pays in producing areas were discovered in 1956. Total oil production increased 1% from 81,131,000 bbls. in 1955 to 82,314,000 bbls. in 1956.

As in previous years, most of the discoveries in 1956 were in Mississippian formations. Three new pools produced from Pennsylvanian sandstone, 11 from Mississippian sandstone and limestone, and 4 from Devonian or Silurian limestone and sandstone.
