Petroleum production in the Middle East countries in 1956 totalled 1,257,611,320 bbls., an average of 3,455,350 BD. This compares with a total production of 1,183,951,800 bbls. in 1955.

Production in India and Pakistan in 1956 was 4,990,070 bbls., an average of 13,650 BD. This compares with 4,594,000 bbls. in 1955.

The Garzan field in Turkey went on production in October, 1956.

An important discovery was made at Qum in central Iran when Alborz well No. 5 flowed wild at rates estimated between 80,000 and 100,000 BD. Another important discovery was made in Saudi Arabia when Aramco's Kharsaniya No. 1 found oil in commercial quantities. Exploratory work continued in Kuwait with results which appear to be very encouraging. A possible commercial discovery was made in Syria.

Geological and/or geophysical surveys were carried out in all countries covered by this review except Cyprus and Lebanon.

For the purposes of this review, Turkey in Asia (Anatolia) is considered as part of the Middle East. Turkey in Europe (Thrace) will henceforth be covered by the review of Europe.
