Title: Developments in West Coast Area in 1957

Abstract:

Washington: One successful new-field wildcat resulted in the first oil discovery in the state. Three dry holes were drilled. Total exploratory footage was 20,469.

Oregon: Six unsuccessful new-field wildcats were drilled. Exploratory footage totalled 29,432.

California: Five hundred eighty-four exploratory wells were drilled during 1957 with a total footage of 2,932,339. This is a decrease of 3.1% in the number of wells and 3.4% in total exploratory footage as compared with 1956. Exploration was 15.6% and 19.3% successful as to wells and footage, respectively, compared with 18.6% and 21% in 1956. The discovery record was 9 fields, 6 oil, 3 gas, and 38 pools, 31 oil and 7 gas. Approximate production in 1957, crude oil, 339.1 million bbls. down 3.5% from 1956, natural gas liquids, 29.7 million bbls., natural gas, 472 billion CF (includes gas from dry gas fields and residue gas from oil fields). Basement was reached in 50 unsuccessful exploratory holes. There were 53 active exploratory wells at the end of the year.
