In Illinois 2,291 wells were drilled for oil and gas in 1958, as compared with 2,585 in 1957, a decrease of 11%. These figures are exclusive of water- or gas-input wells, salt-water disposal wells, and old wells worked over.
Exploratory drilling decreased 19% from 788 wells (FOOTNOTE 3) in 1957 to 639 in 1958. Eight new pools, 48 extensions, and 14 new pays in producing areas were discovered in 1958. Total oil production increased from 76,649,000 bbls. in 1957 to 80,779,000 in 1958.
Of the 8 new pools discovered in 1958, 3 produced from Pennsylvanian sandstones, 3 from Mississippian sandstones and limestones, and 2 from limestone of Silurian age.
