Title: Pleistocene Berclair Terrace of Medio Creek, Bee County, Texas

Author(s): James E. Conkin (2), Barbara M. Conkin

Abstract:

The Pleistocene Berclair terrace (Sellards, 1940) of Medio Creek in Bee County, Texas, is divided into an upper and a lower unit. The faunas of the upper and lower units are discussed and the invertebrate fossils are figured.

The lower unit of the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek is correlated with the lower 4-5 feet of fossiliferous gravel and sandstone of the Berclair terrace of Blanco Creek (Sellards, 1940).

The occurrence of Smilodon cf. S. fatalis, reported for the first time from the Pleistocene of Bee County (lower unit of the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek), lends faunal support to Sellards' correlation of the Berclair terrace with the Ingleside deposits (now thought to be Sangamonian) of San Patricio County, Texas.

The upper unit of the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek is shown to be younger than the fossiliferous beds of Sellards' Berclair terrace of Blanco Creek, and thus is to be correlated with post-Ingleside deposits (post-Eunice of Doering, 1956).

The following invertebrate and plant fossils are reported for the first time from the Pleistocene of Bee County.

Upper unit of the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek: Amblena perplicata, Amnicola sp., Helisoma antrosa, Lampsilis hydiana, Pisidium sp., Praticolella berlandieriana, Retinella indentata, Stenotrema monodon aliciae, S. stenotrema, Succinea avara, and calichified roots.

Lower unit of the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek: Amnicola sp., Helisoma antrosa, and Praticolella berlandieriana.

Praticolella berlandieriana, as well as the genus Praticolella itself, are recorded for the first time from the fossil record (Sangamonian).

No artifacts were found in the Berclair terrace of Medio Creek during this study.
