Title: Developments in Upper Gulf Coast of Texas in 1963

Author(s): J. Rex Reynolds (2), Wayne A. Piette (3)

Abstract:

In 1963 exploratory drilling decreased 5% and development drilling increased 10%. Total drilling activity showed an increase of 7%.

The 244 exploratory wells resulted in 49 discoveries, 18 of which are classified as new fields. Success ratio for wildcat wells was 1 of 5 or 20%.

The Frio was the objective of more wildcat tests than all other trends combined. The Miocene trend led in development drilling.

The Frio trend regained its lead as the most actively explored trend by geophysical methods. An increase in exploratory activity is expected in the Miocene trend offshore Texas, and in the Smackover trend in the northwestern counties of the district.
