Major oil and gas development in Ohio during 1964 occurred in the central part of the State with intense drilling activity to the Copper Ridge ('Trempealeau') Dolomite of Cambrian age. Development from the Silurian Albion sandstones ('Clinton') and from the Mississippian Berea Sandstone continued at a steady pace. The total number of new wells drilled was 2,654, of which 208 were gas wells, 689 were oil wells, 178 were combination wells, and 1,579 were failures. Total new footage drilled was 8,060,766 feet, of which 4,409,843 feet was in Morrow County.

Secondary recovery, storage, workovers, and miscellaneous wells totalled 135, and raised the footage drilled for the year to 8,325,927 feet. There were 756 exploratory tests drilled (28.48 per cent of new holes, and 28.91 per cent of total footage). This drilling resulted in the discovery of many local areas of production in central Ohio and in several discoveries in outlying areas. Annual production was 15,580,000 barrels of oil and 37,713,000 Mcf of natural gas.
