Title: Geology of Saber Bar, Logan and Weld Counties, Colorado

Author(s): E. G. Griffith (2)

Abstract:

The Upper Cretaceous "D" sandstone is oil-productive at the Saber field from a barrier bar, a linear north-trending sandstone body at least 10 mi. long and approximately 1 mi. wide. The presence of the bar was suspected in two tests that penetrated a thick sandstone section in an area where the "D" sandstone generally is thin. Development drilling has revealed the presence of a sandstone body as thick as 45 ft., having a permeability of several hundred millidarcys. Permeability is expected to be greater in future wells that are drilled farther seaward on the bar. The shape and internal structure of the bar suggest that it was formed by moderate wave action in shallow water, the sand having been supplied by longshore currents. Regional reconstruction of the depositional en ironment can be an aid to predicting the occurrence of other "D" sandstone bars.
