Title: Petroleum Developments in North Africa in 1966

Author(s): J. N. Bowerman (2)

Abstract:

Oil production in the North African nations of Algeria, Libya, Morocco Tunisia and the United Arab Republic increased 460,000 b/d in 1966 to an average of 2,366,000 b/d. Sizable increases were recorded in Algeria and Libya. The first Tunisian production went on stream in June, 1966.

Exploration activity continued to decline during the first half of the year, but a revival became evident toward year end. Of 112 new-field wildcats completed during the year, 15 oil and 2 gas discoveries resulted. The first oil discovery in the Western Desert of Egypt may have opened a new basin to development.
