Abstract:
Previous workers proposed various trace elements as geochemical indicators of reef and nonreef carbonates. Analysis of the data of Chester and Billings and Ragland shows that the concentration of some of these elements (total rock Ni, Co, Cr, V, and Ba, and acid-soluble Ni, Co, V, Pb, Ga, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, or K) is a function of the clay-mineral content of the rocks. This gives an energy index for the environment of deposition of the rocks and is not a direct reflection of their facies type.
