Title: Developments in South Texas in 1970

Author(s): James A. Stone (2), Fred Goodwin, Jr. (3), L. Joe Sockwell (3)

Abstract:

A total of 1,758 wells was drilled in South Texas during 1970, compared with 2,051 in 1969. Exploration drilling was 13.8% successful, down from 23.9% in 1970.

Seismic activity decreased 10.1%. Activity increased in all trends except the Oligocene-Miocene and offshore.

Drilling in the Paleozoic trend continued, but was unsuccessful.

The Jurassic trend was dormant. Exploratory drilling for the Sligo Formation (Lower Cretaceous) continued with 1 discovery. Completions from the San Miguel sandstones (Upper Cretaceous) were among the most significant discoveries during the year.

Development and expansion of Vicksburg gas production in Hidalgo County dominated the Oligocene-Miocene trend exploratory efforts.
