Abstract:
The ocean basin provinces west of North Africa are distinguished by slope, depth, and morphology according to the standard classification of continental shelf, slope and rise, abyssal plain, and abyssal hills. These provinces are interrupted by island groups, seamounts, volcanic and sedimentary rises, and fracture zones. Bottom reflectivity characteristics to the 3.5 kHz echo sounder vary between physiographic provinces but remain comparatively uniform across the similar regional slopes and depths within provinces. Layered traces on the echo sounder in the surveyed area correlate with major sedimentary interfaces in deep sea cores taken.
