Abstract:
Twenty-seven sonobuoy solutions from the region of the East China Sea shelf are combined with 10 from the Okinawa Trough in four structure sections. An unconformity previously reported to be the Neogene-Paleogene boundary on the East China Sea shelf is here correlated with the Pleistocene-Pliocene boundary. In this interpretation a thick Neogene section is proposed, although the base of the Miocene is debatable. The interpretation presented shows considerable promise for petroleum because of the thickness and structure of the Miocene, which is the producing zone on Taiwan. Velocity-age correlations are based mainly on published land refraction results from northwest Taiwan.
