Title: Redescription and New Nomenclature of Manitou Formation, Colorado: GEOLOGICAL NOTES

Author(s): Lee C. Gerhard (2)

Abstract:

Redescription of the type section of the Manitou Formation is necessary because the original description was highly generalized and unuseable for detailed correlation and environmental interpretation. Separated in the macroscopic and petrographic redescription are 24 units compared with two units suggested in the original description. The word "Formation" rather than the original "Limestone" is used as part of the formal name because of the wide variety of lithologies now recognized in the type section.

Physical correlation of the Manitou within a southeastern facies has demonstrated that two previously unnamed members are easily recognized in the field. These members are described from a section at Horseshoe Mountain in Park County, Colorado, and assigned the new names Ptarmigan Chert Member and Leavick Tarn Dolomite Member.
