Abstract:
A previously unreported bentonite has been found in the lower part of the Devonian black-shale sequence in eastern Ohio. The unit here named the Belpre bentonite is of Late Devonian age and has a geographic distribution in Ohio very similar to that of the older Tioga bentonite. The distribution of both the Tioga and the Belpre suggests a source area in the central Appalachians.
