Title: Gas Seeps and Subsurface Structure off Panama City, Florida: GEOLOGIC NOTES

Abstract:

Rising gas bubbles in the water column above submarine gas seeps in the continental shelf and slope in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico off Panama City, Florida, have been observed on 3.5-kHz reflection records. On the basis of approximately 3,800 km of reflection records in an area of 25,000 sq km, gas seeps appear to be restricted between the 50 and 200-m isobaths along the shelf edge, with a concentration in the northeastern part of the area. Accumulation of gas within the sediments is also indicated by mud volcanoes, wipeouts, and smears in the seismic records. The Destin anticline--a deep-seated, elongated dome with an extensional fault zone in its crest--roughly coincides with the main gas seep area and is probably the source of the gas.
