Title: Petroleum Developments in Australia in 1978

Author(s): E. F. Durkee (2)

Abstract:

Exploration activity in Australia in 1978 increased markedly relative to several preceding years, which reflects both changes in national government policy and the worldwide emphasis on energy. There were 51 exploratory wells drilled and 33 development wells. Significant onshore discoveries include Boggo Creek 2 in the Surat basin which flowed 1,000 b/d from the Triassic and the Strzelecki 3 which flowed 2,400 b/d from the Jurassic in the Cooper basin. The latter is the largest onshore oil flow ever recorded in Australia. Natural gas production increased in Australia by 9.25% over 1977 to 8,290.076 cu m. Oil production in Australia in 1978 increased by less than ½% to 153, 868,130 bbl or about 421,556 b/d.
