Title: Vardaman Triassic-Jurassic Sill, Calhoun County, Mississippi: GEOLOGIC NOTES

Author(s): Frederic F. Mellen (2)

Abstract:

Intrusive basalt-diabase, believed to be post-Pennsylvanian and known to be pre-Cretaceous, has been recorded for nearly 40 years from increasing numbers of wells and counties in north-central and northwestern Mississippi. These rocks are generally assigned a Triassic (Newarkian) age. Three wells in Calhoun County encountered what appears to be a single sill of tholeiitic basalt-diabase at about the same stratigraphic level, about 3,500 ft (1,066 m) above the Lower Mississippian Iowa Limestone, in clastic sediments of Late Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) age.
