Title: Oil and Gas Developments in Far East in 1985

Author(s): R. A. Soeparjadi (2), L. Z. Valachi (3), S. Sosromihardjo (3)

Abstract:

Despite the worldwide oil glut and the resulting slowdown in exploration, the Far East region maintained a relatively high level of activity in 1985. Seismic acquisition nearly doubled, and exploratory drilling declined by only 8%. India, Pakistan, and Republic of China showed a significant increase in wildcat drilling. Multiple discoveries of modest sizes were made in India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and People's Republic of China.

New acreage awards were high in Japan, Pakistan, People's Republic of China, and Thailand. However, Indonesia, one of the most active countries in the region, offered no new acreage.

Oil production was up by about 2% (620,000 BOPD), and gas output increased by 7% (625 MMCFGD). Crude production declined in Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia, which was offset by increased output in People's Republic of China. Development drilling was up by 42%, mostly due to increased drilling in People's Republic of China.
