Figure 12. Conceptual sketch showing the procedure used to analyze the number of deformation bands crossed per unit in different directions from horizontal maps and cross sections. Each square unit (shown in red) contains two sets of perpendicularly intersecting scan lines (blue lines). One set of scan lines is perpendicular to the fault orientation, and the other set is parallel to the fault in the horizontal map or vertical in the cross section. In each square unit, the number of deformation bands intersected along each set of scan lines was counted, and the ratio of deformation band density in different directions was calculated from the average number of deformation bands crossed along each set of scan lines. The average intersection angle between deformation bands and fault and the average deformation band dip angle in each square unit were recorded.
