Correlation and Age of the Athabasca Formation1

William Carruthers Gussow2

ABSTRACT

The age of the Athabasca formation has been controversial ever since it was discovered by McConnell in 1988. The evidence available has been re-examined and re-interpreted, with the result that a new name "Martin Lake Series" is here given to the thick, folded and faulted sandstone-conglomerate-volcanic series of the Beaverlodge area, on the north side of Lake Athabasca, while "Athabasca formation" is retained for the flat-lying sandstones south of Lake Athabasca. The former are continental formations of late Early Precambrian age, while the latter are marine sediments, which are believed to be of Middle Devonian age. Purely on the basis of lithology, it is suggested that these might be correlated with the upper part of the Elk Point of the Interior Plains.
