Abstract
Lower Elk Point Section in East-Central Alberta
ABSTRACT
The Lower Elk Point subgroup has been redefined with its upper limit the base of the Winnipegosis carbonate. The evaporites, red beds, and thin carbonates which comprise the subgroup have been subdivided into five widely mappable formations. These are defined in this paper and new names assigned to four of them. It is intended that this new nomenclature will clarify some of the previously confusing elements of Elk Point stratigraphy. This paper is a prologue to a more comprehensive regional dissertation on the Elk Point to be published in the Canadian Sedimentary Basins Symposium of the Alberta Society of Petroleum Geologists.
