Horridonid Brachiopods as Horizon Indicators, Permo-Pennsylvanian of the Yukon Territory

Samuel J. Nelson

ABSTRACT

Field methods are presented by which the ?Upper Pennsylvanian Lower Limestone unit of the Yukon Territory can be distinguished from the Lower Permian (Leonardian) Tahkandit formation by horridonid brachiopods. Specimens from the Lower Limestone probably represent a new genus with lamellar shell surface and ventral (not dorsal) cardinal spine bases. In contrast those from the Tahkandit have a pustulose shell surface and dorsal (not ventral) spine bases. Two species are probably present in the Tahkandit. The lower part bears specimens very closely related to Horridonia horrida (Sowerby), and the upper part Horridonia timanica (Stuckenberg).
