Boundaries of The Edmonton Formation in the Central Alberta Plains

John D. Campbell

ABSTRACT

The Kneehills Tuff Member of the middle Edmonton Formation rests directly and conformably on sediments of the Bearpaw Formation at Sheerness in East-Central Alberta. That part of the Edmonton Formation below the Tuff Member is thus extremely wedge-shaped from west to east, pinching out completely at Sheerness, and the uppermost Bearpaw there is probably younger than the uppermost Bearpaw of south-eastern Alberta. The Ardley Coal interval, near the top of the Edmonton Formation, is part of a complex delta structure that involves the basal Paskapoo sandstones as an integral part; it is concluded that sedimentary deposition was continuous from late Edmonton time through into Paskapoo time.
