Abstract
Abstracts: The Geochemistry of Some Graywackes and Some Shales
69 Graywackes and 33 shales were analyzed spectographically for B, Ba, Co, Cr, Ga, Mg, Mn, Ni, Sc, Sr, Ti, V and Zr, and the distribution of these elements studied within a graywacke bed, between graywacke beds in one section, between stratigraphic sections and between formations showing the nature and magnitude of the variation in concentration. Disaggregation of one sample yielded four fractions, quartz plus feldspar, clay matrix, carbonate cement and heavy minerals, which when analyzed, show what each fraction contributed to the chemical composition of the graywacke. Chemical composition was correlated with mineral composition determined by point-counting. Graywackes appear to retain the minor element distribution pattern of the parent rocks in the

provenance area. Graywackes differ little from the average crustal rock. Correlation of each pair of elements is attempted and the geochemistry of each element in graywackes is discussed in detail.
A miscellaneous collection of shales was analyzed and correlation of element pairs carried out. Boron appears to increase in concentration in shales of younger age. Pelagic shales and shales associated with graywackes show differences in composition and in structure.
