Core and Sample Storage in Western Canada

J. R. Pow

ABSTRACT

About 95 per cent of all core recovered from wells drilled for oil and gas in Western Canada is stored in whole or near whole condition at five repositories, two at Calgary and the others at Charlie Lake, Regina and Winnipeg. This core, if laid out end-to-end, would extend over a distance of 500 mi. It represents an important one to two per cent of the total footage drilled to date in Western Canada.

Almost 6,000,000 sets of drill cuttings have been washed and placed in single or duplicate vials for permanent storage at the repositories. They represent an important 12,500 mi of drilled footage and account for about one-third of the total footage drilled to date in Western Canada.
