Subsurface Correlation of Bentonite Beds in the Lower Cretaceous Previous HitVikingNext Hit Formation of South-Central Alberta

L. C. Amajor, J. F. Lerbekmo

ABSTRACT

Study of approximately 1000 electric logs and 100 cores of the Previous HitVikingNext Hit Formation was carried out over an area of some 60,000 km2 in south-central Alberta in a search for correlatable bentonite time horizons. Six bentonites varying in thickness from 5 to 60 cm proved useful for at least local correlation. Five of these were differentiated chemically by XRF analysis in order to verify the log and core correlations. Three of the bentonites were found to be areally extensive enough to aid in dividing the formation into three time-slice units designated Basal, Lower and Upper. This refinement in the time framework for the Previous HitVikingTop Formation permits deciphering of the development and migration history of individual sand bodies.
