The Stable Carbon Isotope Distribution of Distillation Fractions of Three Canadian Frontier Crude Oils: GEOLOGICAL NOTES

L.R. Snowdon, H.R. Krouse

ABSTRACT

Three crude oils from Canadian frontier basins have been fractionally distilled and the fractions analyzed for stable carbon isotope content in order to evaluate their source rock affinities. The two Previous HitBeaufortTop-Mackenzie samples appear to have a similar source. The East Newfoundland Basin sample was selected as an example of a marine-derived oil, and indeed it was found to be isotopically heavier than the other two samples. The isotopic distribution within the low-boiling fractions, however, indicated that terrestrial organic matter from a second source may also have contributed to this oil.
