Magnetostratigraphic Restrictions on the Age of the Frenchman Formation and the Magnitude of the Sub-Frenchman Disconformity in Southwest Saskatchewan

J.F. Lerbekmo

ABSTRACT

The latest Cretaceous fluvial sediments of the Frenchman Formation in southwestern Saskatchewan rest on a disconformity displaying at least 70 m of local relief down through the flat-lying Battle, Whitemud and Eastend formations. To ascertain how much time was taken to produce this relief, a magnetostratigraphic comparison was made between two sections displaying approximately the thickest and thinnest Frenchman deposits.

The youngest uneroded Battle sediments were deposited during polarity chron 30r. The lowest, and presumably oldest, Frenchman sediments belong to the lower part of polarity chron 30. Therefore the time available for erosion of the disconformity was that equivalent to the missing part of polarity zone 30, probably not more than 0.3 Ma.
