Abstract
Magnetostratigraphic Evidence Bearing on the Magnitude of the Sub-Paskapoo Disconformity in the Scollard Canyon-Ardley Area of the Red Deer Valley, Alberta
ABSTRACT
In the past, the contact between the Scollard and Paskapoo formations in central Alberta has been interpreted by some authors as regionally disconformable, and by others as conformable with local erosion. In this study, two sections are examined paleomagnetically for evidence of the magnitude of the disconformity. It is found that polarity zone 28 and half of 28r are missing from the Scollard Formation at Scollard Canyon, whereas all of 28r and most of 28 are present in the Ardley area some 50 km to the northwest. Therefore the sub-Paskapoo disconformity at Scollard Canyon represents a hiatus of approximately 1.25 m.y.
