Detrital Zircon Geochronology of Siluro-Devonian Sandstones, Rocky Mountains, Northeastern British Columbia

ABSTRACT

Quartzose sandstones of latest Silurian to middle Devonian form the basal part of four unconformity-bounded, carbonate-dominated shelf successions of the Alberta Basin in the Rocky Mountains of northeastern British Columbia - the Muncho-McConnell, Stone, Dunedin and Slave Previous HitPointNext Hit formations. The off-shelf equivalent to the Dunedin Formation is a massive channel deposit of quartzose sandstone that overlies basinal strata along a 30-km wide re-entrant in the northern part of the Ospika Embayment (Halfway River map area). Paleocurrent measurements from basal sandstones of the Dunedin Formation, including the channel deposit, contain a northeast-directed component over a large area and suggest possible sediment derivation from a western Previous HitsourceNext Hit area, perhaps reflecting uplift during the early phases of the Antler orogeny. To test this hypothesis, we dated single detrital zircon grains, using the U-Pb technique, from sandstones of shelf (Muncho-McConnell and Slave Previous HitPointNext Hit formations) and basinal settings (massive channel deposit) to examine their provenance. Twenty-nine single grain analyses from four different samples yielded a distinctive suite of U-Pb ages that are indistinguishable regardless of paleogeographic setting and closely match the ages of basement terranes that underlie the Peace River Arch in the autochthon to the east. These data support derivation of sediments of both basinal and shelf association from the same Previous HitsourceNext Hit: the emergent Peace River Arch area to the east. Alternatively, to account for the northeasterly-directed paleocurrents, Dunedin-equivalent quartzose sandstones of the basinal association could have been derived from the west and acquired their detrital zircon provenance signature by recycling pre-Devonian sandstones.

Des gres quartzeux d'age silurien superieur a devonien moyen forment les parties basales de quatre successions de plateau dans le bassin de l'Alberta dominees par des carbonates et separees par des discordances dans les Rocheuses du nord-est de la Colombie Britannique--les formations Muncho-McConnell, Stone, Dunedin et Slave Previous HitPointNext Hit. L'equivalent de la formation Dunedin au-dela du plateau est represente par des depots de chenaux massifs de gres quartzeux qui recouvrent des strates de bassin le long d'un rentrant de 30 km de large dans la partie nord de Ospika Embayment (carte de Halfway River). Des mesures de paleocourants des gres de base de la formation Dunedin, y compris dans les depots de chenaux, ont une composante nord-est sur une vaste etendue et suggerent une Previous HitsourceNext Hit sedimentaire potentielle de l'ouest, peut-etre un reflet du soulevement pendant les phases precoces de l'orogenese Antler. Afin de tester cette hypothese, nous avons date des grains detritiques de zircon, a l'aide de la technique U-Pb, provenant de gres de plateau (formations Muncho-McConnell et Slave Previous HitPointTop) et de bassin (depots de chenaux massifs) pour examiner leur provenance. Vingt-neuf analyses de grains de quatre echantillons differents fournirent une suite distincte d'ages U-Pb qui sont indifferenciables quelle que soit la disposition paleogeographique, et qui correspondent de tres pres aux ages des terrains du socle qui se trouvent sous l'arche de Peace River dans l'autochtone a l'est. Ces donnees supportent une origine unique pour les sediments de plateau et de bassin, l'arche de Peace River faisant emergence a l'est. Alternativement, pour tenir compte des directions nord-est des paleocourants, les gres quartzeux equivalents a la formation Dunedin dans le bassin auraient pu provenir de l'ouest et auraient acquis leurs zircons detritiques par recyclage de gres devoniens.
