Abstract
Provinciality and Diversity Across the Permian-Triassic Boundary
Abstract
A Permian-Triassic reconstruction of Pangaea defines three major oceanic regions; the Pacific and Tethyan Oceans and the Boreal Gulf. Reconstructions of the general oceanic surface circulation patterns disclose different hydro-graphic and thermal regimes for the shelves of each region which correlate with faunal provincial patterns. The Boreal shelf was coolest and least stable and the Tethyan shelf warmest. The continentality of Permian-Triassic times created fluctuating trophic regimes and led to a major drop in species diversity, achieved by a wave of extinction that was biased towards specialized endemic species. The resulting early Triassic fauna was cosmopolitan even though the physical differences between the oceanic regions remained at least as great as during the Permian.
