Petroleum Potential of the Mediterranean Basins

Pierre F. Burollet

Abstract

The Mediterranean Sea consists of several deep basins separated by swells or straits trending roughly along the Alpine mobile belt. Continental shelves are generally narrow, except in a few places which have been explored for the last 10 to 20 years. At present just five areas are productive: the Gulf of Valencia, the Italian Adriatic Sea, the Tunisian Pelagian Sea, the Greek Prinou basin, and the Nile Delta. Deeper waters are still unexplored and may represent large long term targets.
