Tertiary Sedimentation in the Southern Previous HitBeaufortNext Hit Sea, Canada

P. S. Willumsen, R. P. Cote

Abstract

Five Tertiary deltaic cycles have been identified in the Previous HitBeaufortNext Hit-Mackenzie Basin. These cycles added approximately 90000 square km to the continental shelf, and deposited in excess of 400000 cubic km of sediment. The five deltaic cycles followed a distinct counter-clockwise progradational pattern into the Previous HitBeaufortNext Hit-Mackenzie Basin with sedimentation beginning in the southwestern part of the basin and shifting northeast. The areal distribution of the three major depositional facies for each of the five deltaic cycles, namely the delta plain, the delta front and the prodelta facies, has been outlined. The recognition of a turbiditic subfacies within the prodelta sediments has been of major importance and has provided new and deeper prospects for petroleum exploration in the Previous HitBeaufortTop-Mackenzie Basin.
