Red Devonian sedimentation in the southern Siberian Regions

Anna Anatolyeva

Abstract

Red Devonian sedimentation in the southern Siberian regions is intimately related to the tectonic setting and active volcanism.

The area was separated, by the Kalbin geosyncline, from red sedimentation in the Kazakh area. The sediments occur in large depressions along the margin of the Siberian platform. In depressions remote from the platform the red sediments are also found. Facies changes from continental, and coastal marine, red sediments to gray marine sediments are observed which are reminiscent of the conditions on the southern margins of the Caledonides of Great Britain.

Thick volcanic formations of varying composition, the composition depending on the tectonic setting, are intercalated with the sedimentary sequences in all the depressions.

A general continuous, rather than cyclical, evolution of sedimentary and volcanic processes in relation to tectonic evolution through geologic ages is suggested.
