Devonian Strata in the Central part of the Rhenish Massif (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, North Rhine-Westphalia), Germany

Hellmut Grabert

Abstract

Ordovician to Upper Carboniferous strata are exposed in several anticlines and synclines of the central part of the Rhenish Massif (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge) east of the Rhine. The Ebbe anticline and the syncline of Attendorn contain the best exposures, and the Palaeozoic sequences of these areas are dominated by Devonian sediments. These Devonian beds, which consist predominantly of clastic deposits, were laid down in the Rhenish Trough of the Variscan geosyncline. All these beds include a marine fauna of a well-oxygenized near-shore, shallow water environment. Both, this particular fauna and the clastic sediments, are known as the Rhenish facies. From the beginning of the Middle Devonian onward, an increasing advance from the east of the Hercynian facies is noticeable. This advance, however, did not greatly influence deposition of clastics in the Rhenish Trough.
