Stratigraphic importance of Devonian Lingulid Brachiopods in the USSR

L. S. Batrukova

Abstract

Lingulids are widely distributed in Devonian deposits and are encountered in rocks of many types, i.e. sandstones, siltstones, shales, marls, limestones, etc. They are especially abundant in bituminous deposits (of Domanik type). However, until recently, lingulids, because of taxonomic neglect, have largely been ignored for biostratigraphic purposes. In connection with detailed study of oil-bearing Devonian deposits of the Russian platform, the interest in lingulids has been heightened. A number of palaeontologists have described new species of lingulids, commonly in association with other faunal elements. About fifteen new species of lingulids have been described since 1950 from the Devonian of the Russian platform. Particular reference may be made to the studies of G. P. Batanova.

The writer has assembled a considerable quantity of data and has discriminated more than fifty species of lingulids, most of which have been published. Studies reveal that lingulid species have a short stratigraphic span, but wide geographic distribution. Consequently, they constitute reliable guide fossils for limited stratigraphic division and facilitate detailed correlation. Lingulids are the principal guide fossils for certain horizons.

It is apparent that, with adequate study, lingulids may take their place among important guide fossils for biostratigraphic purposes.
