Biostratigraphy

Stratigraphic importance of Devonian Brachiopods of the Siberian Platform

A. K. Krylova

Abstract

Brachiopods play an important part in the biostratigraphic subdivision of the Devonian of the Siberian platform. Biostratigraphic study of these deposits shows that Spiriferidae are especially significant, with spiriferid genera and species commonly characterizing definite zones. Accordingly, these brachiopods are paramount in the establishment of the biostratigraphic succession of the Siberian platform. The Spiriferidae of the Lower Devonian are not well known but should probably be assigned to the genus Howellella. The Middle Devonian is characterized by representatives of genera of Elytha, Emanuella and Elythyna. In the Upper Devonian there are Mucrospirifer, Adolfispirifer, Adolfia and Cyrtospirifer.

In the Devonian succession of the Siberian platform, representatives of the other families of brachiopods accompany the spirifers, but only a few of these have notable stratigraphic value. The well-developed brachiopod assemblages in the Devonian of the Siberian platform open possibility for correlation with the Devonian sections of the Kuzbass, the Minusinsk basin, the Urals, Timan, the Russian platform, and the other regions.
