Abstract
Biostratigraphy
Middle Devonian Biofacies of central and northeastern Missouri
Abstract
Eight biofacies, the Turbonopsis, the Hexagonaria profunda, the Hexagonaria lativentra, the Atrypa bellula, the Atrypa missouriensis, the Stropheodonta, the Tabulophyllum, and the Stachyodes Biofacies, are present in the Middle Devonian strata of central and northeastern Missouri. The Rensselandia Beds (Cooper, 1944) are considered to be the upper part of the Hexagonaria profunda Biofacies. The terms Favosites-Anostylostroma Bed and Thamnopora Beds are introduced. The former occurs in the lower part of the Hexagonaria profunda Biofacies; the latter in the Stropheodonta, Tabulophyllum and Stachyodes Biofacies, most commonly at the base of the Tabulophyllum Biofacies. These biofacies are correlated with fossil zones in the Cedar Valley Formation of Iowa and northwestern Illinois.
