Boundaries and Correlations

The proposal of a new delimitation of the Siluro-Devonian boundary

Bedrich Boucek, Ivo Chlupac, Radvan Horny

Abstract

Recent investigations indicate that the graptolite-bearing beds of the Bohemian (Hercynian) development, until recently considered uppermost Silurian, are equivalent to the Lower Devonian of the Rhineland and Great Britain.

The base of the Monograptus uniformis Zone (between the Budnanian and Lochkovian Stages of the Bohemian development) seems to be the most plausible position for the Siluro-Devonian boundary for the following reasons:

1. it locates the boundary in a continuous graptolite succession,

2. there is a rich association of other faunal groups,

3. it represents a landmark in the phylletic development of several faunal groups, while the continuity of evolution and sedimentation is demonstrated by other groups which cross the boundary.

4. it is closest to the traditional Siluro-Devonian boundary.

5. it leaves the heterogeneous but characteristic Rhenish faunal complex of the Gedinnian and Siegenian stages in the Devonian, and also the Dittonian (O.R.S.) remains unchanged.

6. it permits the division into three stages of both the Bohemian and Rhenish development of the Lower Devonian, where the base of the M. uniformis Zone is stratigraphically identical.

Reasons for selecting the Barrandian area, the classical Central European area, as a stratotype are given. These include — a continuous conformable marine succession with rich faunas, absence of facies changes at the boundary, excellent exposure, and accessibility.

The section at Budnanska skala, near Karlstejn southwest of Prague is preliminarily proposed as a stratotype.
