Boundaries and Correlations

The importance of Ostracods in drawing the Siluro-Devonian boundary in the European part of the USSR

Anna F. Abushik

Abstract

In the Siluro-Devonian boundary beds of Europe, the remains of Ostracoda are essentially ubiquitous, and their study correspondingly important.

The Silurian-Devonian sequence of Podolia is characterized by Ostracoda. A study of Podolian Ostracoda and comparison with associations from the other regions of the European USSR and western Europe has shown:

1. the Malinovtsy complex of Ostracoda corresponds to assemblages in the Klinteberg - Eke beds of Gotland and partly to the Graptolitian and Pagegiai beds of Latvia and the Durnaja beds of the Polar Urals;

2. the assemblage of Ostracoda from the middle and upper parts of the Skala beds corresponds to associations in the Into-Parm beds of the Polar Urals, the Greben and Vaigatch horizons of Vaigatch - Novaya Zemlya, the Kaugatuma - Ochessare beds of Estonian SSR, the Minija and Yura beds of Latvian SSR; the upper part of section of the Leba well (Poland), the Oved-Ramsosa beds (Skania), and the Ludlow Bone Bed and Downton Castle Sandstone (England);

3. the Borschov assemblage differs from that of the Skala in containing the elements of “young” associations, and cannot be compared with any other known associations of Ostracoda of this time in Europe;

4. the Tchortkov complex contains abundant Cornikloedenia, known in Europe from the Upper Gedinnian, and representatives of the Devonian genus Evlanella;

5. the Ivane complex is characterized by the development of more specialized species of Cornikloedenia, which are close to Siegenian-early Emsian representatives of the Rhine region and probably are not older than Siegenian. On the western slope of the Urals, the analogues of Tchortkov and Ivane beds are represented by the beds with primitive Moelleritia.

On the basis of the development of the Ostracoda, the boundary between the Silurian and Devonian Systems in the European part of the USSR may be drawn at the base of the Borschov beds and their analogues (the sharp distinction of Skala and Borschov assemblages, the appearance of the “young” element in the latter) or at the base of Tchortkov beds and their analogues (the presence of a Gedinnian - Siegenian element in the Tchortkov and Ivane assemblages).
