Famennian Brachiopods of the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

Gertruda Biernat

Abstract

The Famennian sequence of the southern Holy Cross Mountains of central Poland contains a diversified brachiopod fauna dominated by rhynchonellids of largely cosmopolitan character. Up to now, thirty brachiopod genera belonging to nine families have been recognized within the fauna, with most of the genera being monospecific. Two brachiopod groups are well defined in the sequence: a lower group occurring in the Lower Famennian associated with Frasnian elements in its lower part; and an upper group present in the upper Famennian. Each group displays a different set of taxa. These evident taxonomic changes are best explained by transgressive and regressive events.
