Tetracoral Zonation of the Stromatoporoid-Coral Limestones, Southwestern Holy Cross MTS, Poland

T. Wrzolek

Abstract

Analysis of the distribution of 80 species recognized by the author in the stromatoporoid-coral limestones of the southwestern Holy Cross Mts, Poland, allows the recognition of 7 biozones and 2 biohorizons:

1. Disphyllia laxa Oppel-Zone (associated with Stringocephalus burtini), recognized also in Moravia (Galle, 1985),

2. Temnophyllum occidentale Range-Zone, with index species known also from the upper Givetian of Australia,

2A. Acanthophyllum sp. n. zone, informal, with typical Givetian genera Acanthophyllum, Grypophyllum, Stringophyllum,

3. Disphyllum Acme-Zone, with the topmost Givetian (?) Hexagonaria davidsoni biohorizon in its lower part; the latter species occurs significantly higher in western Europe (Coen-Aubert, 1982),

4. Macgeea-Thamnophyllum Acme-Zone, with Hexagonaria aff. hexagona biohorizon at the bottom,

5. Phillipsastrea smithi Oppel-Zone, and

6. Frechastraea pentagona Oppel-Zone, the two latter within the detrital and marly limestones overlying the typical stromatoporoid-coral complex; taxonomically most differentiated and with species recorded also in the high Frasnian of Devonshire (Scrutton, 1968), Belgium (Sorauf, 1967, Coen-Aubert, 1977, Tsien, 1977), western Germany (Birenheide, 1978) and Moravia (Galle, 1985).

The Zones are mostly separated by intervals either impoverished in or devoid of tetracorals.
