Devonian Vertebrates from Old Red Sandstone Facies in China

Pan Jiang (P’ an Kiang)

Abstract

The distribution of Old Red Sandstone in China may be roughly subdivided as follows: The Early Devonian chiefly occurs in Southwest and South China, the Middle Devonian in South and Northwest China and the Late Devonian in southern Ningxia and eastern Gansu, North China. Middle and Upper Devonian yellow sandstones occur on the middle and lower Yangtze region of South and East China.

Among more than 60 vertebrate genera described in the Devonian of China, only about 4 are of worldwide distribution, the others (more than 50) are endemic.

Biostratigraphically, the Devonian vertebrates of China may be grouped into 7 assemblages, mainly based on galeaspid agnathans and antiarch placoderms.
